Funds Needed For Treatment of
Invasive Plants in Chandler Pond

Chandler Pond will need another treatment for the very invasive plant, Eurasian watermilfoil, next spring. This will cost about $5,000.

The treatment with the chemical Sonar (fluridone) was performed in 2005 by Aquatic Control Technologies, one of only 2 licensed aquatic herbicide appliers in the state. This was approved by the Boston Conservation Commission and recommended and approved by the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection. It was paid for in 2005 by the Boston Dept. of Parks and Recreation.

There has been extensive hand harvesting by CPPS volunteers using boats, waders, snorkeling, and a session by paid scuba divers to supplement the 2005 Sonar treatment. However, the rapid growth of many generations of Eurasian watermilfoil in a season by fragmentation is known to always prevail eventually. Since there is no adequate biological control currently available, not treating this shallow pond would allow the Eurasian watermilfoil to cover the surface, damage the fish population, and promote the mosquito population.
